Apparently a number of reviewers struggle with the tone and apparent "bias" of Goldschmidt. I was suprised at these accusations as Goldschmidt, in my opinion, presents the issues and perspectives of the various peoples, factions and religions in as fair a manner as is possible, given the tremendous diversity in the region. The first half of the book, detailing the birth, spread and rise of non-Arab empires (the Mongol, Safavid and Ottoman empires) is a bit rushed - I wish greater attention was given the intellectual achievements of the era, but as the title states, it is a *concise* history. The history really hits its stride mid-way through, as Goldschmidt disucsses the politics of the Middle East in the 20th century. The reasons behind Middle Eastern anti-westernism are complicated; the web of resentments, issues, past slights and mis-interpretations are difficult to clearly explain. In a little over 100 pages, the main points are well laid out, and provide a solid foundation for further study. To summarize, the European "mandate system" driven by British and French imperial designs in the region, in addition to the cultural and economic disparities between urban and rural parts of the Middle East and competing visions among Arabs themselves of what the region should look like (particularly a "pan-Arab" nation led by whom? Egypt? Syria? ) and mis-steps by the United States all conspired to create a wide variety of competing and often hostile camps that perpetuate instability to this day.I was particularly impressed with Godlschmidt's history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and its relation to Arab power politics between Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The perspectives and attitudes between nations and their leaders were clearly and concisely laid out. In my reading, this was the real strength of the book. However, I do have misgivings, hence the three-star review.I thought his disucssion of post-war Lebanon and post-war Iran were entirely too shallow. These two states, perhaps more than other nations in the region, have been manipulated by the west more than any other in the middle east. And while French and American power politics were discussed, the impact and extent of the involvement of these nations were not presented in nearly enough detail. On an editorial note, I found his asking rhetorical questions stale. As other reviewers have pointed out, the intended audience is apparently college sophomores rather than the general reader, which should also be kept in mind before purchasing. For a "concise" history, this hits the mark. In my mind the gold standard in histories of the region (and a book that is written with a broader audience in mind) is Tamim Ansary's Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes.
Once in while I get a school book worth keeping and this is that book. With two (2) authors there are two (2) perspectives. And just as there are many views or sides to consider of any situation both authors, I believe, try to convey a bigger picture of the place we call "The middle east". From the Geography of the area, beginning at life before, during and after Muhammad, a fairly detailed time line of events up into todays civilization. Although the book is very detailed and even had me reaching for a dictionary to look up new words, I found it easy and even enjoyable to read. And even though this edition is older, the information inside was parallel to what my college professor was teaching.I found new insight and understanding of the many cultures I didn't possess prior to reading this book. It still amazes me how Western civilization-the government, the media, historians, and even religion to some extent- has narrowly shaped our very thoughts by giving us so little information;we are blinded by ignorance.I hope someone else may find as much fulfillment as I did. I truly was not expecting such a book but I am grateful I did.
I used this book for a college class - history of the Middle East. The book is not set up like a standard school book with color and pictures. The book is actually set up like a chapter book. However, I will say I found the book to be very enlightening and easy to follow along. I can honestly say I did learn a lot about the Middle East and it's history.
Wonderful way to find out where alot started!
I really was very happy with price/condition of the book. I always prefer to source books through Amazon since the price point and selection seems to really be better than at my local bookstore giants.
This book gives a reader a quick overview of the Mid East essential to understanding current events
Outstanding introduction to Middle Eastern History. Can't wait for the next edition for latest developments.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I discovered that much of what I thought I knew about the history of the Middle East was inaccurate - at best. Every American should read this - It will give you a whole new perspective on American intervention in that area of the world, and bring a much better understanding of Islam and the culture of the area. Highly recommended!
