In my own scripture study, I don't believe I've ever really considered individual words at quite the same level as Elder Robinson has in this book. He examines scriptures almost microscopically, to get to the real essence of what they are saying, and reveals a meaning that I -- and I expect many others -- have missed. I was continually impressed at what he perceived and how obvious it was, once pointed out. I read with eyes wide open, amazed at what there was to learn that I had never realized before. I have a much better understanding of the Atonement than before, and I now understand that there is so much more grace available to God's children than I ever realized. Thanks to Elder Robinson's close study and clear explanations, I have found a new well of hope for my own eternal future and a realization of what it means to actually believe and trust Christ, not just to believe IN him. He is not just someone to read about who lived long ago and did the world one big favor. He is a resource to be counted on NOW, and now I have an understanding of this and why.
Robinson is my favorite LDS writer. Being a Professor of Religion, he is well versed with original language interpretations/meanings.Also does an excellent job in this book of explaining basic gospel principles using metaphors and personal examples.Gives hope to each of us that salvation is possible in spite of our weaknesses.I personally think that every LDS member (especially prospective missionaries) read his book "Are Mormons Christians?"He does a masterful job explaining (and debunking) all of the different ways that 'mainstream' Christians try to discredit us as Christians
A bishop recommended this book to me and it changed my life. I could tell you a lot of things about Jesus Christ, but I did not know Him and or begin to comprehend what His Atonement means in my life. I thought I had to do a lot of good things to balance the scale of mistakes I had made. This book taught me that is negating the Atonement in my life. The title story, the Parable of the Bicycle is a profound explanation of how the Atonement really works in our lives and the Savior's love for us. The book is sprinkled with other real-life examples to help us comprehend the scriptural documented teachings. I have given this book away so many times because of its powerful way of teaching about the Savior. Do you believe Christ--that He really is who He says He is and will do what He says He will do. That is the crux of the book. You gotta get it!I have gifted it to teens off to college or preparing for missions and older family and friends too. I have the book in hardback, on my iPad, and I have it on CD to listen to in my car. Plus, I have 2 extra copies waiting on the shelf for when I need to hand out another one.
In this wonderful, well-written book, you will come to know Jesus Christ better, and to understand the deep love He has for you, and thus understand the plan of mercy that has Him at its center. Many of us believe IN Christ, but some of us do not BELIEVE Him. Some feel that they simply aren't good enough for the Atonement of Christ to work in their lives. But all of us aren't good enough. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). But the good news is that if we try our best and strive to improve throughout our lives, then Jesus Christ will make up the difference, and "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow" (Isaiah 1:18). This is the basic message of this spiritual, uplifting book.
I work with many people who share the common burden of realizing that we all have weakness and make mistakes. They want to be forgiven and feel relief from their mistakes. There's an app for that. Without Christ we're all dead meat. Stephen Robinson puts our life in a more eternal perspective with wonderful family, personal, and general examples that show how there is still hope for anyone who desires. I have given out several copies of this book to show people that they can still be acceptable and move forward thanks to Christ. This is perhaps the most powerful and central theme of Christianity- that we can be redeemed and forgiven. He gives such great real-life examples that you come away knowing that you too can make it (the bicycle, his wife trying to be everything to everyone, a team, merging businesses, etc.) If you need a dose of personal self-worth and hope, this book will do it.
This book teaches things I should have already known, and perhaps on some level did know. It makes it concretely clear that by the grace of our creator we are saved after all we can do, and that no one, no matter how good they are, can expect to be saved without God's grace. I always knew that much. But what it drives home is that it is sufficient. Our offering, so to speak, is not what's important. It's the intent and our willingness to try that are important. We are not and cannot be perfect. We all fall short. So regardless of how short we fall, Christ's grace is sufficient if we are willing to accept his atoning sacrifice. It's repetitive because it restates this six ways from Sunday until one of the examples will finally hit home to the reader.
Professor Robinson provides over and over again in this book the difference in Believing Christ and believing in Christ. If we believe Christ and confess our sins and seek remission of our sins, He can clean us up and we become acceptable to God right now. Having faith in Christ is not quite the same and we do not become necessarily clean. He provides this message in simple clear stories and parables that young and older adults can easily understand.
This is by far the easiest read and quickest best way to come to understand how the Atonement of Jesus Christ actually works in your personal life. It help you fully understand the way that grace and justice, aka: mercy and justice, work together - and it is nothing like what churches teach today! In fact most Mormons don't even know how mercy and grace work together in a profound way. So buy it, read it, and be enlightened by it. It is a book that will "lighten the load" along your path of faith.
