I'm thoroughly on board with the idea that the confirmation prep process is broken (and probably never worked well). I'm on board with formation as disciples being a key element. I'm even mostly on board with dynamiting the whole current approach. But (switching metaphors), I think there's too much baby in the bathwater being thrown out.The current process, at least as I'm familiar with it, emerged in response to the warm-fuzzy era of confirmation prep where kids learned nothing. It emphasizes knowledge, but it pretty much assumes that the confirmandi are interested and engaged, which is too often not the case. The author recognizes the problem (I am really a fan f switching from "You have to do this" to "You get to do this"), but swings the pendulum too far in the other direction, dumping nearly all the informational content from the formation process.How much info is the right amount? If we taught everyone everything they need to know, we'd never get around to confirming them--especially if all the time we have to teach them is an hour or two every week. But they do need to know at least the broad outlines of the Catholic Faith. One would hope that they'd learned all of this by the time they hit confirmation prep, but one would be disappointed in that hope.There is certainly material in this book that I'm going to use, and the mentoring approach has a lot to recommend it, but I'm just not convinced that the program in the book is anywhere near the right balance.
Excellent, but NOT a cookie cutter approach....and they also warn about that. VERY USEFUL though. They did and are making a difference. I am sure this is not for everybody, because old ideas.....die hard. Just READING this will open your mind to so many possibilities. In fact, SHOULD be required reading by every Christian priest and minister working in parishes or churches in our Country.
I have been a Confirmation leader for the United Methodist Church for three years and have read a handful of books. This one is the most consise and practical one I have read. Every aspect of Confirmation is covered from the parent meeting, to the schedule, to the curriculum and with examples to make it your own and to help others get closer to God.
An easy to read, small book filled with ready to use, practical information. I was a Confirmation Coordinator for many years and now a DRE and I highly recommend this book for every new Confirmation Coordinator.
Like the other Rebuilt resources, this book is a great way of thinking as well as to explain to parents, sponsors, and catechisms how this different than we experienced.
A great resource! Easy to read. I bought one for Youth Ministry and one for our DRE - I'm hoping we will be ordering more for our Catechists. Thank you Christopher Wesley! Once again, another very helpful tool for us as we engage our young people in their Faith.
