The complexity of the characters in this beloved, of mine, series never ceases to amaze me.It is easily a ten star novel but we are only allowed five so...Chief Inspector Gamache and wife have settled into Three Pines as they adjust to their retirements. All the usual friends are there to greet us, the reader, plus, as would be expected, new friends are made. One new friend, a wee lad, Laurent Lepage is possessing an imagination that knows few boundaries. He adores coming into the village shouting 'Aliens,' or 'lost child,' when he craves attention. Of course, Laurent adores Armand Gamache. The village is tiring of this however, when Laurent comes racing in telling tales of an impossibility. Armand gently says, 'No" and drives the boy home. When Laurent disappears, Armand must question himself, what if he had listened and followed the boy.The gentleness of a attention-seeking boy leads us into one of the deepest and terrifying journeys that madness of men can bring.Again, I bring up the complexity of the characters in this book. We learn new secrets and realize just what happens in the minds of murderers.Excellent novel.
I've read many of the wonderful reviews this book has received, but I must respectfully disagree. I think this is by far the weakest of Louise Penny's books. I realize that the 'supergun' did exist in the Canadian forests during the Cold War, but I found the constant discussions about this weapon very dull. Details about the gun, its invention and inventor filled page after page of the novel, and I found myself skimming just to get through all this unnecessary background information. I craved more news about Penny's wonderful characters: How were Armand and Reine-Marie adjusting to life in Three PInes? How was Clara coping with the loss of her husband? Please tell me more about Ruth and Myrna, Gabri and Olivier. I read Penny's books to catch up on these old friends, and my curiosity was not satisfied with this novel. There was some character interaction, but it mostly dealt with the supergun, and I just couldn't get excited about that. At all. I will still be first in line to order the next installment of the Three Pines stories. Until "The Nature of the Beast" I had never been disappointed by Louise Penny's stories. I'll be back for more.
In some ways, this story is bigger than the medium. I love everything Louise Penny has written about the idyllic small community of Three Pines and Inspector Gamache. She has created a complex set of characters and manages them with care and talent and compassion. Their Canadianism enriches every paragraph. My reservation about this book is the "big evil" at its heart. Louise Penny always works brilliantly with flawed characters who sink to murder through greed, fear, and envy but in this story the ultimate villains seem larger than the setting of Three Pines can accommodate; a serial killer, war criminals, arms dealers and corrupt government agents. So I was fascinated to read at the end of this book that the most preposterous character, Gerald Bull, and his giant gun were actually real and their story at the heart of this novel actually was true. Maybe that is why the book seems lumpier than the previous ones; forcing a real monster under the fabric of Three Pines was not easily done. And yet, this is again an excellent and enjoyable story and I hope not the last in this series.
Since the missile launcher has already been mentioned in another review, I'll go into more detail here than I'd originally intended. Still, you may not want to read further if you're bothered by spoilers, because the amount of detail here is definitely that. Background: In the 1980's, a Canadian artillery expert named Gerald Bull proposed designs for 'super guns'. Saddam Hussein was interested, and started an effort known as ' Project Babylon'. Bull's involvement was not too clear, at least from what I've read, but in any case he was assassinated. Whether by Israel, who was afraid Saddam would get the gun, or on orders of Hussein, because Bull ether did not or could not produce what Hussein wanted, only those involved know.At any rate, this much of the book is factual.More background: There were at least two initial versions, 'Baby Babylon', which was actually built, and 'Big Babylon'. From the description in Penny's book, the gun found is clearly 'Big Babylon', based on the size of the loading chamber and bore. Now here begin the problems: 'Big Babylon' had a barrel length of 512 feet - no, not a typo, '512' and a weight of 2100 'tonnes' - given the spelling, I assume the Wikipedia article is using British 'tonnes'.So we have two choices: Either the gun is real, with the absurdities noted below, or what is being related is someone's nightmare or psychotic episode. Confession: I've not finished the book, nor do I intend too, but I assume that Penny is too good a writer to resort to such a weak plot device of 'none of this was real'.So that leaves us with a real gun. There are only three ways it could have gotten there: 1) It was built in place; 2) The components were built somewhere else, and assembled in the forest; 3) It was completed somewhere else and moved there.I don't think I need to point out how absurd any of these scenarios are. Any one of them would have been noticed by everyone in Three Pines. Remember that the reason they were able to find Laurent's stick was because, as a 9-year old, he hadn't gone 'too far' into the forest. So the gun was close to the village. A 2100 ton, 512' - and more, that was just the barrel - gun put there, and no one noticed?A reviewer of the last Penny book, "The Long Way Home" observed that it was sad when a writer as good as Penny didn't know 'when to hang it up.' Sad indeed.
